Agra-based Samarth Trigunaik started putting on weight after going to Canada to get her commercial pilot license in 2012. Her two years there translated into poor lifestyle choices and eating habits. His weight soon rose to 91 kg. Samarth only woke up to the problem when he returned to India and started applying for a job. Strict fitness standards for pilots meant he would have to lose 10kg before he could be certified enough to fly.

Samarth embarked on a drastic diet that did more harm than good. Deprived of essential nutrition, he felt that his eyesight had become weak and his stamina had diminished.

The beginning

He decided to join the HealthifyMe program in June 2015 and started realizing the benefits within 20 days.

“I exercised on my own and controlled food portions, but I never lost weight. Within days of signing up for HealthifyMe, my stamina skyrocketed and I started to feel more motivated,” he says.

The exercise

The experts at HealthifyMe put Samarth through a combination of gym, yoga and diet training.

Her strength and performance coach Saravanan ‘Sharu’ Hariram says one of the challenges was Samarth’s busy schedule. He, along with yoga instructor Pragya Bhatt and nutritionist Ritu Puri, designed a program that took into account Samarth’s time constraints, goals and body type.

“Since Samarth said she could only exercise for an hour in the morning, we prescribed cardio four days a week and full-body strengthening two days a week. He was also instructed to do yoga asanas with a special emphasis on Surya Namaskar,” says Saravanan.

Samarth went to the gym for an hour every morning and did yoga for about 45 minutes every night.

The diet

Ritu put Samarth on a diet that complemented her exercise regimen. He would wake up at 8am every morning with a glass of warm lemon water, followed by a small protein-rich meal. This was followed by an hour-long workout and then a post-gym meal.

Lunch – at 2 pm – was always preceded by a plate of salad. It usually comprised two chapattisa small bowl of dal or chicken, a vegetable and cottage cheese/raita. In the evening, he had green tea and a fruit. Dinner consisted of a salad dressed with a few drops of apple cider vinegar, chia cake, missi roti, a vegetable and a glass of buttermilk.

“The best part of the HealthifyMe program was that I could get in touch with the specialists anytime during working hours,” says Samarth. “If I had to miss my exercise for whatever reason, they offered alternatives,” he adds.

HealthifyMe also gave Samarth a pedometer to count the number of steps he took each day. “I had a goal of 7,000 steps a day,” he says.

Samarth is excited about her HealthifyMe experience. “I love this app. I will recommend it to others,” he says.

Nothing beats being able to fit into an old pair of jeans. “From 36 inches, my waist has shrunk to 32,” says Samarth.

But weight loss isn’t the only reward. “HealthifyMe made me feel happier, healthier, more confident and energized,” he says. “A pilot’s career is related to his health and medical fitness. The show played an important role in boosting my career.”

Proper guidance, along with discipline and consistency, were the key to Samarth’s successful weight loss.

Although Samarth was experimenting with exercise and dieting on her own, they had no impact.

Saravanan attributes this to a lack of knowledge about proper fitness techniques. “People often create their own fitness regimens and – in most cases – they don’t work. Firstly, because they do random exercises at the gym and the workout is not personalized. Second, exercise is not supplemented with proper nutrition,” he says.
